Loke Yun has been selling chicken rice in Ampang since 1982 and it's now the second generation who have taken over the running of the store. So you can say they are old hands at this.

The rice here is tasty enough to eat on it's own and in fact it's so good that Jasmine rice advertises at the store itself.
I don't recall them doing this at many places - not even Nam Heong. I think Nam Heong, especially the franchised stores, and the Chicken Rice chains are not worth it. Something has been lost in the franchised process. Chicken rice is still best at the individual store or stalls.

The chicken here is steamed and unlike some places where you'll get a chicken with a thick layer of skin & fat, Loke Yun uses very 'healthy' chicken. The layer of skin is very thin & the fat almost non existent. So health conscious diners will find this appealling.

They also provide chicken intestine in the mix of chicken, which I absolutely enjoyed.

The cucumber that comes with the plate of chicken is also excellent. Somehow it feels like it's been treated so there's some salty taste within the cucumber and absolutely none of the bitterness that sometimes afflicts cucumbers.

Add on dishes to have would be the bean sprouts which are crunchy, firm & fresh.

The soup that comes with each plate of rice is not bad, though not the best at a chicken rice store.

And the thing that completes the meal is their chili. Lime & a bit of garlic added inside their chili sauce  just makes it a wonderful complement to the rice, chicken or even bean sprouts.

If you have side sishes with your meal, it will cost about RM25 for 2 persons. Cheap? No. Good? Yes!

The best - hmmm, I don't think so but definitely one of the better chicken rice in town  - number 1 for me would still be Wong Chai Kee in Setapak.

Loke Yun opens everyday from 10:30 am - 3 pm & 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm and is located at 158, Jalan Besar, 68000 Ampang. Phone number is 03-42919884.
