crab claw - click meLuke had told me about this place called De Foodland in Bandar Sri Menjalara and he raved about the varieties of crabs there. 31 in all. We went there once but it was closed for their annual holiday. Imagine that . So we ended up in a place called Meng Yet Seafood where we had "White Cloud Crab" (Pak Wan Ching) which is a steamed crab on top of a really smooth steamed eggs. The crab was really good because it was fresh but the steamed egg was even better. What was obvious that it took some skill to get both at the right consistency because the crab takes longer to cook than the egg. If the egg is cooked too long, it then becomes overcooked but somehow the chef time it right, so each of them was perfect. Kudos to the chef.

Anyway back to De Foodland. We arrived just before 9 pm on a Sunday night & they were all out of crabs already. What a bummer! I had psyched myself up to eat crabs and abstained from all seafood the days leading to it. And now I was being deprived of the crabs, once again!!!!!! How can any store be that says is open for business till 11:45 pm be out of crabs before 9 pm. I can't understand that. I was so disappointed.

31 style of crabs & crap, 2 times here I still can't sample a single one of it.

Instead we had to settle for something out of their menu of 24 styles of prawns, 11 styles of egg, 7 styles of mantis shrimp, 23 styles of taufu, 14 styles of sotong, 16 styles of pork, 18 styles of vegetables, 18 styles of chicken, 9 styles of bamboo clam. It wasn't crabs but it would have to do. Special orders like Buddha Jump Over the Wall are available if you order 3 days in advance.

First to arrive was a fried garoupa in thai style sauce. The fish was very nicely fried but the best part of it was that it was only RM4 for a 100 gm. Even cheaper than the garoupa we had in Langkawi. Can you imagine that. 50km from the coastline and fish here is cheaper than a beachside restaurant on an island.

cheese prawn - click meThe cheese prawn went great with the 'man tou' (fried bread roll). The sauce was thick with cheese & garlic. Not exactly something that would come to mind as mouth watering but let me tell you it was a truly remarkable and a most excellent combination. However, the mixed vegetable (loh hon chai) was quite forgettable & I'll skip talking more about it. Our favourite dish of the night was the stewed sea cucumber which was mixed with fish bladder, mushrooms & mini abalones. The taste was superb, a nice blend of all the ingredients. My only complaint was that serving was too small.

All in our meal came up to RM115.80 for 5 and despite not having crab, it was still a good meal. Call before you go because they often close the shop when they have met their fortnighly quotas. OK, I am not really sure about the quota stuff but they do close often. Like twice a month.
