Patrick and I decided that we should have a traditional chinese breakfast one Saturday morning. What's a traditional chinese breakfast? Well, it must of course have pork in it. Some greens would be good. Herbs to invigorate the body after a week of toil is welcomed. So what qualifies? Yeah dim sum might qualify but Bak Kut Teh is even better.

Patrick had just taken delivery of his new Britney Spears car (he doesn't look the part but he absolutely looooooooooooooooooves Britney and perhaps he was a wee bit inspired by Mr Pitt as well but I think what tipped him over was Britney) So this was to celevrate his new wheels.  Get him loaded and he'll probably start singing her songs and perhaps do a Britney move as well?

Bak Kut Teh - click meWe headed for Ah Sang's Bak Kut Teh in Sungei Way village. Patrick was saying that it was curious that there should be a pork haven in the heart of a Muslim area but he forgot that years ago, this was a new village - a product of the Briggs Plan to combat the communist insurgency and at that time this was predominantly (if not solely) a Chinese area. Well, times have certainly changed since then. Today, Sungei Way is now next to one of the most productive and profitable Free Trade Zones in Malaysia.

Ah Sang has been here for ages, perhaps even since I was a kid. OK - perhaps that was not too long ago  ;-) But they are certainly a fixture here and is quite well known among connoisseurs of bak kut teh and you can see that by the diners they attract. Old time Sungei Way residents, families, yuppies and their puppies - you've got it all here. On one table you could overhear a conversation of a mahjong session, another you could hear two mothers talking about their children and yet another table - discussing about their exploits in faraway lands.

Ah Sang's Bak Kut Teh soup is more herbal than some and while there is MSG in the soup, it's of a tolerable limit. So if you like your Bak Kut Teh soup clear and more savoury than herbal, this is not the place. I like it herbal, so that's why I used to come here.

While the soup has retained it's flavour, the meat however was not up to mark. It was a bit "mooi" - not very fresh. So it was bit too soft. That's a no - no, a failure in my book. I think Grandpa in SEA Park has now taken over the mantle as the best Bak Kut Teh in PJ.

We had a pot for two, two sets of yau char kwai (an absolute must), two bowls of rice and a pot of chinese tea for RM24. While the price was OK, the fact that it's standard has gone down left me a bit disappointed.
