A good friend, YY, and her husband, Sam, was back in PJ from Singapore and she said they were dying for a fix of Bak Kut Teh and being the good friend that I am, I of course volunteered to take them on this Bak Kut Teh quest. OK, I had my own agenda as well, I was having one of my cravings and this week it was Bak Kut Teh. Read my previous post on Ah Sang's Bak Kut Teh in Sungei Way.
YY was told that a good place for Bak Kut Teh was Wee Sang Kee in SS 2 (Jalan SS 2/66) but I wasn't so sure. But we decided that if the Bak Kut Teh here was not good, we would go to Grandpa's Bak Kut Teh. We ordered a pot of Bak Kut Teh for three. What was good was that they had yam rice and yau char kwai and the plate of stir fried vegetables was not bad but what wasn't good was the Bak Kut Teh. So how? Being deprived of real Bak Kut Teh for so long, YY determined that it was decent BKT. I did not agree. Why wasn't it good?
The soup was a disappoinment. It was savoury, yes but had hardly any herbs in it. Some may like it this way, I don't. The meat wasn't fresh at all and perhaps had been overcooked from sitting in the pot too long.
Having been immensely disappointed with this poor Bak Kut Teh, I suggested that we take our adventure to Grandpa's in Paramount Garden. YY was feeling a bit full but Sam was game. Good man! What a find, YY! 5 minutes later, we were at Grandpa's Bak Kut Teh to have our Bak Kut Teh dinner part deux.
OK, so there was no yam rice here but the the Bak Kut Teh was excellent. The soup was a nice blend of herbs and savouriness (though I think it could even be better with more herbs in it) and the meat was just nice - firm and tender at the same time and still tasting fresh. This suggests that they must have only put in the meat later in the day and not in the morning, otherwise it would have been overcooked. And the intestine was superb. It had no bad aftertaste (they cleaned it well) and it was firm but with a touch of springiness to it. We also ordered extra Yau Char Kwai and extra soup and had it all soaked in the soup. See picture of the left or click on it if you need a bigger view of it. Sam was commenting how the Yau Char Kwai doesn't go all soft even after it's been in the soup for awhile.
OK, the meal at Grandpa's Bak Kut Teh cost slightly more per person than at Wee Sang Kee but I'll settle for it anyday. Me thinks I am not going to have anymore porky for the next week. Hmmmm - OK maybe for the next 2 days.
