Uncle Lim seems to be standard bearer of what a new style "old school" kopi tiam should be. Located in the Ikano Power Centre shopping mall and serving old time favourites like roti bakar (toast bread), half boiled eggs and nasi lemak, it proved to be very popular with the shoppers at Ikea. Some claimed that the half boiled egg here is the best in KL and PJ. Well, for a while it was and sometimes it still is. It seems that it depends on whom is boling the egg. Somehow they have managed to keep a perfect consistency.
However I am glad to report that I had a very pleasant roti bakar and half boiled egg at Uncle Lim's recently. Maybe it was because we were the first 3 orders they served that morning but the roti bakar and eggs arrived almost simultaneously. The eggs arrived slightly ahead of the bread. That was OK as it gave me time to break open the egg and get its contents into the plate. Once I had done that, the roti bakar arrived. Which meant that the egg and the bread was both hot. Excellent.
The eggs were very nicely boiled. Not overcooked as is oft the case in many places. In fact sometimes they get it wrong at Uncle Lim's as well but this time - they could not be faulted. The roti bakar had a good portion of kaya inside it, though if they had more better in it, it would be even better.
We tried the chicken porridge as well today and it was a pleasant surprise. It was actually not bad at all. My only gripe was that the yau char kway was a bit soft.
However there are misses at Uncle Lim's as well. On a previous visit to their outlet in Subang Parade, we sampled some other stuff which we found to be rather pathetic.
The Nasi lemak was a letdown. The rice was not fragrant. The sambal was not tasty. The ikan bilis way too hard. The chicken curry was tasteless.
The Assam Laksa was pathetic as well. It wasn't sour enough & there's no prawn paste - argggghhh. Assam Laksa is not Assam Laksa without prawn paste. Ummm - wait a minute - some of you might say who says so. Well, OK - in Penang, you need prawn paste in the Assam Laksa, so I am applying that standard to all Assam Laksa. And to top it all, they use the wrong type of noodle. They are supposed to use 'lai fun' but they used vermicelli instead.
