It had been a long time since I had gone out with the badminton gang for a meal but they suggested that we should all get together to do a meal to celebrate the May birthday boys, the birth of NK's child and the return of JH from an extended trip to Hong Kong. So there was a lot to celebrate.
Inititally we were supposed to have gone to Teluk Gong but the heavy rain put paid to that plan. Then we thought of Pantai Seafood but we were kind of late already and Pantai was overflowing with diners. So we decided to visit the "famous" cheese crab place at Bukit Mayang Mas instead.
Arriving at about 8:30 pm, the place was packed like usual. Originally they had started as a single shop lot, then expanded to two and now they occupy three shoplots with one of it being air-conditioned. Eventhough it was packed, it did not take too long for the food to arrive.
We had the butter cheese crab which was served in a claypot. Claypots are supposed to help retain the heat better. But really what's important in the case of crab is the freshness of the crab. The crab was actually not very fresh and the meat broke up the moment you tried to get at it. The cheese sauce was good and it's best eaten with the fried bread that goes with it. However they were too stingy on the sauce. We could have certainly done with more of the cheese sauce. As you can see from the picture we licked the claypot clean.
The fried chicken with salted fish was not that good either. The chicken was nicely fried but it didn't really have much taste of salted fish in it. The "sang cheong" was okay. The "sang cheong" was not stir-fried like most places but was boiled and then mixed in with a relatively generous amount of dried prawns. If there was lard in it, it would have been even better.
The "seong tong lala" was not too bad, especially after we added some sake to the soup. Yeah, we brought our own sake and Jeffrey hit upon the brilliant idea of adding some of it into the soup and it actually enhanced the flavour.
The best dish of the night was the catfish. The fish was fresh and it saved the dinner.
At RM145 for five, eating here is within the range of what you would expect to pay at Petaling Jaya restaurant but I don't think I am coming back here.
