air hitam assam laksaI used to live not far from the Penang Air Hitam Market and this would be one of the places my mother would bring me for grocery shopping. Of course I didn't appreciate the smells nor the food then. The only thing I ate then was wantan mee and also fried meehoon. But that was a long time ago and I have a better appreciation of food now. In fact, I have even been branded a food snob in a recent post on the forum.

On our recent trip to Penang, this Air Hitam assam laksa was the first place that we headed for after showing my children the old family home. Many would say that this is no longer the best assam laksa around but it was purely for reasons of nostalgia that I visited it. Both my wife and I had strong memories of that place from our childhood. Look at the picture and see the amount of noodles the guy has ready. That's the volume of business he still does daily.

Parking in Air Hitam is horrendous - perhaps worse than I remembered it. Anyway after 10 minutes of looking for a place, I decided to illegally park. :-0

air hitam assam laksaThe assam laksa was perhaps a bit less spicy than I like but the soup was still good. I am comparing this to what I get in Kuala Lumpur so perhaps it's not a fair comparison - but hey that's my only reference. And there was no MSG in the soup, or at least I did not feel in effects of it. And the best part of it, each bowl costs just RM2.30. Oh, the drain is now a lot cleaner than before.

However, the smells from the market still remains so if you are easily offended by free smells, this is not the place for you. I am proud of Bernice, she found the assam laksa very much to her liking.
