taste of foochow red wine chicken noodlePudu is a place of discoveries and my lunch one afternoon with three lovely ladies, Elaine, Cheng See & Wai Mei ,was one such odyssey. I was designated driver that day and since I didn't have a place in mind, Cheng See suggested that we should try out a Foochow that she had just read about earlier that day in The Star. She even had the newspaper cutting with her. Talk about being prepared. Ordinarily, I would prefer not to review a place that has just been written about but since there are not many Foochow restaurants around, I decided this could be worth a try.

I shall not go into the historical bits about the restaurant as you can find out more about that in The Star article. Parking usually is not easiest thing to find in Pudu but the good news about a Taste of Foochow is that there is an open air parking right beside the restaurant. However, please be prepared to pay RM3 per entry. Alas, such is life in Kuala Lumpur.

Each of us had a bowl of a singature Foochow dish, Red Wine Chicken Noodles (mee suah). Depending on your appetite, the servings could be a bit small or just nice. While it looked pretty, I found that it lacked enough wine in it. So not enough kick. But Wai Mei & Cheng See said it was OK. Considering that they are catering to a lunch crowd, I supposed it makes sense not to have too much wine in it. Otherwise you could end up being overly "spirited" in the office after lunch. That may not be a desired outcome especially if you are going to be having a meeting with the boss.

According to Cheng See, our fishball princess, there was too much whitening agent to make the fish ball too white. It may be pretty to look at but it adds unnecessary chemicals to the fish ball and that is not a good thing.

We wanted to try their famous Oyster Pancake but there was a very long wait for it. Each pancake is fried individually. The elder Wong sits down in front of the wok and fries each one with loving attention. I think this warrants a return trip.
