If you have read my recent postings on the forum and also on my Facebook group, I have been looking for a good pau or Chinese bun. One reader, Chuan, responded by suggesting that I should try the "pau" stall operated by an old man, affectionately known as "Ah Pek" at Taman Segar. Obviously I headed there lilke a bee to honey once I had been told about it. Ah Pek's stall is easy to find. It's located opposite a mamak restaurant, Restoran Muhammad Maju, on Jalan Manis 4. The other landmark is the Venezia Italian Restaurant which is just a few doors away. We tried the fried yam. While the yam was not quite crispy, nevertheless my wife liked it because she said the fried yam did not have too much oil on it. Usually fried yam tends to be too oily at most places. So if you like your fried yam less oily then give this a try.
The pau may not look smooth like most commerically manufactured pau - in fact it's downright wrinkled. The dough is a bit sweetish I didn't get to taste the char siew pau as my children got to them before I did but they said it was good. They wanted more so I got to assume it must have been good. The tai pau was really "tai" (big), maybe not Yip Chee Mei big but still big enough. What was different about the "tai pau" was that the taste had an interesting tinge of chinese rice wine in it. Ingredients included chicken (wish it had been de-boned), mushroom, turnip and a piece of egg. Ah Pek's stall is open every night from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Arrive after 10:30 pm and he is closed. |
