This being my first post in Chief Eater's space, it's only proper to introduce myself. My name is Ariel, I am a foodie and have been going on crazy food trips with Chief Eater and gang. Now that intro is over, let's get on with the review!
Foodie extraordinaire Edward once again outdid himself in his lunch recommendation today.
"Want to have great fried fish head? Come, follow me!" was all he said and we trooped out of the office with hearts and stomachs full of anticipation. Thomas drove, Edward directed, and Ben and I were loafing off at the back. Then we stopped at this completely unassuming place - a wet market.
You would never believe that really amazing food lies behind the staid navy blue banner.
And never mind that the innards of this dim and dingy Wet Market is not the best of ambiance to work up an appetite for food. Or that most of the ceiling fans are out of order leaving patrons sweating over their plates.
As the adage goes, good food comes to those who wait for it. And wait for it we did. We waited and waited. And waited some more. I was so hungry, my fingers started to shake.
An enterprising curry puff seller made his rounds. Thomas bought one huge curry puff (RM1.50) for us to share. But I only managed a couple of bites when the food finally arrived.
The first dish was this Pork and Yam combo garnished with thin slices of dried squid and a lone salad leaf. Each pork slice comes with a layer of skin, fat and superbly tender meat. The yam must have melted all around the heavenly pork pieces and the dried squid which looked deceptively like sliced ginger went very well with the pork. I would give this 4 out of 5 stars on the awesomeness scale. It was slightly saltier than what we'd like, else I would have given it full marks.
Next came the much-awaited Fried Fish Head dish. The slices were well-marinated and fried just so - leaving the pieces tender, succulent and yet crunchy where it counts. To our delight, we discovered that numerous bits of la la (a type of cockle) are strewn generously around this dish. It was good, I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Reason being, I loved the pork dish more.
We finished off with a plate of Choy Sum stir-fried with egg and lashing and lashings of Kuan Yin tea. Not a single grain of rice was left on our plates. It was truly a satisfying lunch. Edward, the foodie certainly did not disappoint.
