Kim Gary's Macau Burger by Nigel Yap E-mail

Ok Kim Gary isn't really a restaurant in a traditional sense, but they do serve Chinese or rather quasi-Chinese food. Now many of you will be wondering, "What's so great about Kim Gary? Eat the Cheese rice until jelak already". Well for those of you who've eaten there before, and eaten nothing but the cheese-baked rice, this is what I'll say to you, "EAT SOMETHING FROM THE MENU THEN!!!!" Ok, rants aside, this review is actually more for those who have yet to try any of the Kim Gary Restaurants.

Now if you haven't read already what is quite famous in Kim Gary is its cheese-baked rice dish. I personally have yet to try this particular dish, but if anyone of you does, remember to post it up to see what the fuss about it is all about. Now back to my review. First, lets talk where you can find a Kim Gary Restaurant. There are essentially four places in the Klang Valley where you can go; Sungai Wang, Mid Valley, The Curve and Avenue K. I think there are more outside the Klang Valley but I’m not sure. So what else about Kim Gary makes it unique? Well for starts, it only serves individual dishes, so if you’re looking for a sit down family style rice dinner, you can forget about it.

Secondly, is the sheer amount of choices in their menu. There are at least 40 different dishes available in the menu, ranging from rice to noodles and even a bit of Korean. I’ve been there so many times and I’ve yet to even taste a tenth of the dishes. Another thing is, the prices at Kim Gary are essentially very affordable. Compared to most similarly styled restaurants like Kim Gary, Kim Gary’s prices can be considered cheap. Dishes range from as low as RM4.90 to around RM14 for a dish, depending on what you order. Don’t get me wrong when I say cheap, they are still more expensive than what you get off hawkers.

Kim Gary is essentially a Chinese restaurant; as such what it really excels in is pork dishes. Ok any guys looking for kosher or halal cooking should forget reading this review now. Anyway, Kim Gary’s pork dishes are really the star of the restaurant. Most of their pork dishes are really dishes. The best way to describe them is their pretty close to home cooked food, sometimes better. And if you think its because of the Aji, well think again, having eaten there, I have yet to taste any excessive Aji, if any at all. One of their dishes is the Pork Chop burger Macau style. At RM4.90, you get this big piece of a burger, bigger then what is usually offered at most fast food outlets, and cheaper too. As simple as the dish sounds, one must taste it first before making any judgements. The key to the dish is its pork fillet. The cooks at Kim Gary have managed to bread the pork so lightly that it has that slightly brown breaded look but when you bite into it, its all pork. I kid you not. They have also managed to cook it in way that it locks in the flavour as well as marinate used in the pork. Although simple in presentation, the burger is really delicious when eaten.

Now its almost impossible to review every single food in Kim Gary without being boring so I’ll limit it to the burger. Some of you may think just reviewing the burger is too little but let me tell you this. If a cook can make a dish as simple as a burger taste so delicious, without the need of condiments just imagine what they can do with other dishes. On the down side however, where Kim Gary excels in Chinese food, it sadly lacks in the more western style dish department. Try not to eat the beef there because although they are not bad, its better if you use your money for something more tasty.
