Dinner on sunday nights is a family affair and we headed to
Damansara Utama to check out some of the restaurants I had noticed a
few nights earlier during our Indian food night. I initially had
thought of having Chinese but upon arriving at the place I had in mind,
we noticed there was only one table occuppied. That's not a good sign
so we decided that we would look around some more.
We chanced upon this place called Meaty house and the place looked
pack. So we decided that hey, this must mean something good so in we
went. The place had simple decor so one would think that the owners are
more concerned about the quality of their food than the appearance of
their premises. That's good thinking. And the non-halal sign on the
door sort of helped as well. :-) Best way to sucker me in.
Meaty house was opened by the people who bring us the Meaty range of
products (sausages, hams, etc) that can be found in some supermarkets.
Sorrylah no pictures, didn't have my camera with me that night. This is what we had.
Ham & bacon bits cream soup Not something that one would find
at most places, it immediately caught my wife's eye so she ordered it.
My wife liked it, though I felt it lacked a certain spiciness which of
course is easily remedied with some pepper. So what did it taste like?
Well, like a chinese pork soup (something I am not really fond of) with
cream. My wife liked it, me - I think I'll pass.
Honey roasted pork chop & rib Not quite a mouth watering
succulent dish I was expecting it to be because while you can taste a
bit of sweetness due to the honey but the saltiness was overpowering
and really killed the dish. And I felt there was just too much oil and
the meat was a bit too fatty. Hah, this from a person who wouldn't bat
an eyelid or even give a moments thought to eat lard.
Smoked cheese sausage My daughter who is just seven years
old could comment that the sausage did not have enough cheese in it but
nevertheless she said it tasted yummy plus it was easy enough for her
to cut. OK at that age you would want your food easy to eat. I had a
bite and what I found was an unexpected but appealling aftertaste, a
tinge of spicines. You know I really expected smoked chees
sausage would result in the taste of cheese to resonating in my taste
buds.
BBQ Bratwurst Hmm, I would have thought that if they
mentioned BBQ, the bratwurst would have been barbecued and not grilled
over a pan. My wife felt that the sauce in Ikea is even better than
the one served here. So I am not too pleased with this.
Grilled chicken chop The final dish to arrive that night and it
was the most disappointing dish of the night. We had really wanted the
Jambalaya rice but they were out of it so we settled for the chicken
instead. The chicken tasted really bland.
On weekdays they have promotions where if you order one meat dish,
they give you a free light & easy dish. Not a bad deal considering
that it would be about a RM8.80 saving.
King of the hill where sausages & meat are concerned, this place
is not. But at RM58.40, I guess I should not complain too much. When we
were departing, my wife noticed that they were actually looking for a
chef, so it's possible that their original chef had left and we just
caught them during a transition period. One lesson to learn here - if a
place is advertising for a chef - don't go there yet till the sign is
down. Maybe one day I'll go back there for their fried pork knuckles,
but I'll wait when they finally have a chef.
Meaty House is located at 15, Jalan SS 21/56B, Damansara Utama, 47400 PJ and it's open from 12 noon - 3 pm and 6pm -10pm daily.
