Food for a queen? OK, maybe not any queen of any royalty that would immediately come to mind but nevertheless the food here is still good. Restoran Queen located directly opposite the Carrefour on Jalan Peel at the corner of Jalan Shelly and Jalan Peel (55100 KL) is good for food day and night.
During the day, try out the Penang Prawn Mee. It's actually quite good though the soup has more than a bit of MSG and it didn't have any pork in it, only fish cakes. Nevertheless it still tasted good. What makes it special is that you can ask for big prawns. A standard bowl will cost RM3. A bowl with the big prawn and crabsticks will of course cost more. Definitely one of the better Penang Prawn Mee in KL.
While I didn't try it the time I was there the fried Yee Mee seemed very popular with diners there.
At night, you can try the chicken wings and the "pow" there. The "pow" (chinese buns with filling inside) seems very popular with people there though I personally think it's so so only. To each their own.
Outside Queen's you will find some roadside stalls which are the real gems. The curry mee here is something that has to be tried. On the surface it looks like a normal bowl of curry mee. The curry doesn't look very rich, in fact it looks pretty diluted. The ingredients like sprouts, chicken meat, tow foo pok are there and nothing stands out until you taste the soup. In fact you don't even have to taste the soup to savour it. It's found saturated in the noodle as well. What is it??? It's the flavour of "tong kwai" herbs (Angelica) that makes this curry mee a stand out. RM3 for a bowl, no complaints here.
Next to the curry mee is Yang Kee beef ball noodles. There are two more famous beef ball noodles operating at night in KL, namely Ngau Kee on Tengkat Tong Shin and Soong Kee on Jalan Silang but I think Yang Kee is better. It's better than Soong Kee because of the soup and better than Ngau Kee because of the consistency of his noodles.
And finally, the gem of the gems - the Pork Soup. Yes, yes - me and my pork dishes. The soup was simply awesome and it came will all the goodies (pork innards like stomach) that made it a real winner. I drank every drop of it and it had no MSG. For those of you who like coagulated pig's blood as well, then this is one of the few places in KL that still serves it. So try this place out.
